Local economic strength depends on consumers’ commitment to local businesses

I just read a very nice article by David Bradley, President and CEO of the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce.  It serves as a good reminder to think positive in these times of perceived economic turmoil.  Don’t panic, but rather focus on moving forward, one step at a time.  One thing that David says in his article that I agree with very strongly, is that each of us must make the choice, on a daily basis, to shop locally!  If we want our towns to thrive, we MUST support local businesses whenever we can.  Check out David’s article  and lots of other interesting articles in Statesville Living Magazine.

You couldn’t be more correct! I moved back to my hometown area of Statesville after living in Wilmington NC for 2 years. In Wilmington i worked all across the state on Motion Pictures and Commercial and a lot of Photography Jobs. I made the decision to start up my own studio near by my local community were i grew up, a real studio, not in my garage at my home, a 3,000 sqft facility in which i can accommodate corporate advertisement request as well as regular family and individual portraits. My first advertisement decision… a local flyer and poster spreading of statesville… not to hard to do in a small community where i expected to be congratulated on coming home and bettering our area. NOPE, just the opposite, no one wanted the put the flyers up, no one wanted to let me sit business cards… nothing. It’s sad. But your right if people would focus on purchasing services and products from local shops, were costumer service and the products are always better, lets face it. i think Statesville and its surrounding areas would fair much better.

Thank you for allowing me to vent.

I’m sorry you had a less than warm welcome back to Statesville, Jason! I have found the business owners in Troutman to be accomodating re: flyers for nonprofit organizations and such, but I don’t know how they would be about other businesses. I guess it would depend on the situation. A few businesses carry my business cards, but those are typically folks I have developed a relationship with over time. Have you tried joining the local Chamber of Commerce and getting involved in some of the networking activities they offer?
